Established in 1831

Christ Church is a member of the Episcopal Church, The Episcopal Diocese of Albany, NY, and the Worldwide Anglican Communion.

Christ Church in Walton was founded by a devoted group of Christians in 1831, the church began its journey in a schoolhouse under the guidance of Rev. Orange Clark.

In 1832, Bishop Onderdonk's visit affirmed its spiritual mission, confirming seven individuals. Returning in August 1834, Bishop Onderdonk consecrated the new church building.

The stained glass windows throughout the sanctuary were donated to Christ Church through the generosity of William B. Ogden in the late 1800s.

This present structure is not only the oldest church building but also the oldest public building in Walton and a registered historic landmark since 1999.

The pine, hemlock, and stones are from the Walton area, the early parishioners supplied much of the labor. The exquisite stained glass windows, gifted by the Ogden family in the late 1800s, are particularly notable.

The present parish hall, established in 1963, serves as a hub for various community activities, including AA meetings and church events.

In 2024, the tower of Christ Church was completely renovated due to water damage, the existing roof was replaced, and the entire exterior of the church was repainted.

Stained Glass Windows

The stained glass windows were installed in the late 1800's by generous gifts from members of the Ogden family.

The chancel window was put in by J&R Lamb of New York City in memory of William B. Ogden and was judged equal to the finest window in the NY cathedral in color and effect. The two windows nearest the chancel are in memory of his parents, Abraham and Abigail.  The two following are in memory of his 2 sisters and brother & wife.  The other window is in memory of Robert North.

In 1886, two new windows were placed in the narthex of the church. The window on the left or Gospel side was in memory of Carolyn Ogden McCagg and the right or Epistle side window was in memory of Emily Butler Ogden Wheeler. Both were sisters of William B. Ogden and given by the children of those women.

Out of the twelve windows installed, nine in the nave are very tall and each crafted out of over 300 pieces of various colored stained glass arranged to create symbols and scenes of a religious nature.
